Welcome to King School

Dr. King Elementary School is one of five elementary schools in Urbana School District 116 serving students in kindergarten through 5th grade. At King, we believe strong family engagement is essential to student success and academic achievement. We are committed to building meaningful partnerships between school, family, and community.

King students come to Urbana from countries around the world. The multicultural, multilingual nature of the school population provides a rich learning environment for Dr. King students. The presence in the building of teachers from other countries makes it possible to provide instruction in a language other than English to most students.  

King School Pledge

I am a King student. I am responsible for my learning. In honor of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s life and work, I pledge to do everything I can to make king School and the world a place where we live his dream by living, not hating. Showing understanding, not anger. Giving praise, not putdowns. I promise to build peace at school, at home, and in my community each day.

 

School Improvement Goals

Each year, our schools develop School Improvement Goals to guide continuous growth and student success. By focusing on key areas for improvement, we can strengthen teaching and learning, support student well-being, and ensure every student has the opportunity to succeed. 

Attendance

By the end of the 2026-27 school year from 66% to 71% of students will exhibit consistent attendance as measured by panorama attendance data.

Culture & Climate

By the end of the 2026-27 school year we will increase school climate: Teachers from 36% to 46%, Students: from 35% to 45% & Staff: 17% to 27%.

Reading

By the end of 2026-27, 60% of K will meet or exceed their overall composite on DIBELS and 65% of 1-5 will meet/exceed growth projections in literacy.

Math

By the end of the 2026-27 school year, 60% of kindergarten through 5th grade students will meet or exceed their growth projections in math.

Family Engagement

At King, we believe strong family engagement is essential to student success and academic achievement. We are committed to building meaningful partnerships between school, family, and community by providing welcoming opportunities for involvement, scheduling events at varied times to encourage participation, and communicating with families in a clear and accessible manner.

There are many opportunities for families to be involved and learn about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary School, whether through our volunteer program or open door classroom policy.

September: Curriculum Night

This is an opportunity to meet your student's teachers, learn more about what they will learn this year and explore ways to support your student’s success.

November: Family Reading Night

Family Reading Night is an annual statewide event encouraging families to spend quality time reading together. When families read together, you create a positive at-home learning environment that fosters language arts skills and a rich love for literacy and reading.

February: Social Emotional Learning Night

Learn more about our SEL curriculum, 7 Mindsets, through engaging activities that build real-life skills for emotional well-being and foster community connection.

March: Math and Science Night

Explore math and science concepts through interactive, hands-on activities that promote curiosity & problem-solving.
